Knowing: I believe knowing is having a sense of what is going on. Knowing is having evidence to what you have seen. When you witness a problem you know what exactly is going on.
Belief: Having belief in something means you were persuaded by someone or something. When you believe in something you know it is true. Quote: " I pray to the god within me for the strength to ask him the real questions" This quote represents how strong his belief is for his religion.
Madness: I believe madness is a state of going crazy mentally. For example Mrs. Schachter on the train thought that a fire was happening, even though there wasn't. People believed she was crazy. Quote: " It was as though as she were possessed by some evil spirit.

What does it mean to know?
To know means to be certain of a fact or true statement, or be sure/ confident that something is true. Real life example: I know that my birthday is August 31st. I know this because it is the date that I was born and I celebrate my birth on that day every year. Example from Night: "If anyone goes missing, you will all be shot, like dogs." -Page 24. They know that if anyone goes missing, they will all be shot, and they are sure of it. There is not a doubt in their minds that if someone goes missing that they will be shot.
What does it mean to believe?
To believe means to support or trust in something. You do not know have specific proof, but you have faith in it that it exists. Real life example: I believe in God. "For we live by faith, not by sight." -2 Corinthians 5:7. To me, this bible verse sums up religion because you do not have specific proof that it exists, but still believe in God. Example from Night: "But look at these men whom You have betrayed, allowing them to be tortured, slaughtered, gassed, and burned, what do they do? They pray before You! They praise Your name!" -Page 68. The people still believe that God exists, and still worship and praise him, even after all of the torture his people have been put through.
What does it mean to be "mad"?
To be mad means to have lost your mind, and have gone crazy or insane. Real life example: People who have lost their minds claim to see or hear things that sane people do not hear or see. Example from Night: "On the third night, as we were sleeping, some of us sitting, huddled against each other, some of us standing, a piercing cry broke the silence: "Fire! I see a fire! I see a fire!"" -Page 24. She was seeing a fire, when there really was not a fire there. This is a sign that she has gone mad.
I thought Zoe H and Danya T had really good examples.

Being mad is making a belief out of something that doesn't exist. This means that you cant get mad at things that only happen at short times. for example when i get mad at my dog it goes away. "But we were pulling into a station. Someone near a window read to us: "Auschwitz." Nobody had ever heard that name." this means that they believed it was a good camp. This just happened the other day because my mom said she would pay me and i belived her but she didnt. To know means that you are knowelble. "Not far from us, flames, huge flames, were rising from a ditch. Something was being burned there. A truck drew close and unloaded its hold: small children. Babies! Yes, I did see this, with my own eyes ... children thrown into the flames."tgus means that you should study adn doo good on a test

To know is to possess information that is without a doubt true. "We jumped at the sound of the shot" They know that a gun was fired. I know that my eyes are blue To believe is to support or put faith into something. "Long live liberty! My curse on Germany!' he believes that Germany is wicked and liberty is good. In real life I believe that there is a God. To be mad is to not make sense to others or to do something without a logical reason. "Only Idek, the Kapo, occasionally has fits of madness, and then you'd better stay out of the way." Idek randomly attacks people and he beats up Eliezers father. In real life, Al-Queda is crazy because they attack people just to spread terror.

To know is the Ability to posses information and to be informed on a topic or many topics. Quote " A-7713 I knew that was me " like teachers and doctors know there specific science like nutrition
To believe is what a person feels is right like religion or a decision. Quote " Long live liberty " It was my curse on Germany like Catholics now they believe in god
To be mad is when a person experiences a fear or past event in memory and can not take it anymore and lose it or a person like Nazis who go on killing everyone they see. Quote " listen to me you son of a swine" said Idek coldly. " so much curiosity you shall receive 5 times more if you dare tell anyone what you saw! understood"

I think knowing is when you have a strong belief and have something to support it. I think belief is when you are taking a leap in the dark. No evidence of where you are going, but you think, you believe it is the right way. I think madness is more about who believes you. If you are mad then you have no credibility because you can't think about anything, but the thing driving you mad. Mrs. Schachter on the train believed that she had seen the fire, even though there was no evidence. Everyone on the train knew that there was nothing there because they looked and saw nothing. "Some pressed against the bars to see. There was nothing." She was thought as a mad woman because she had her husband and two older left on another train and "The separation had totally shattered her." People thought she had just been an emotional wreck and they just said "She is mad, poor woman..." I like your example for what you think madness is but you didnt say any examples for the other ones

Just because you believe something is real does not mean its true. A little kid believes in santa. Doesnt mean santas real. I really like your example/quote for madness.

The definition of know is very generic. You could know a certain fact, like George Washington was the first president, or it could be something else, like you know that you're going to die in gas chambers in the next hour or so. In this book it's usually the latter, the feeling of knowing what's coming next and what's going to happen. One quote that supports this is on page 36, "In one terrifying moment of lucidity, I thought of us as damned souls wandering through the void, souls condemned to wander through space until the end of time, seeking redemption, seeking oblivion, without any hope at finding either." So at this point it's become known to Elie that he's basically doomed. They don't exactly know what's coming next but they all know that it can't be good. They'll always be lost and destroyed by the events that have happened to them. I almost finished with the first paragraph (What does it mean to know),I didn't complete the real-world example, but I didn't have time to complete the other two! I agree with julia because I really like how julia compared knowing George washington was the first president and knowing that you might die in the next hour in a gas chamber.

I like how GiGi said that belief is when you have trust or support something. An example would be that when you are at a doctor, you would trust the advice they give you because they are a medical professional.
I like how Ethan said that know is to possess information that is without a doubt true. An example would be learning that 8+6=14. This is without a doubt true because if you look at a number line, starting from 8 and going up 6 is 14.
Therefore, a difference between know and belief would be that know is based on facts and belief is based on faith. Belief would be more spiritual and know would be more intellectual.

Know- When you know something it means you have proof or evidence of something. A quote for knowing something: "If someone managed to escape they would be shot." They knew this because they had proof from other people. The Germans said so themselves... that if the Jews tried to escape they would die.A real life example would be if you learned how to do subtraction in math class. You would KNOW that you were doing subtraction the right way because you had proof from your teacher. Believe- When you believe something it means you think it's right, and it hasn't been proven to be wrong but there is no evidence for it to be right. A quote for believing something: "Auschwitz. Nobody had ever heard that name before." This is believing something because nobody knew anything about it. So the Jews had to believe what they had heard about Auschwitz from other people. A real life example would be if your friend started a rumor about somebody but they had no proof. But they didn't have any proof that the rumor wasn't true either. So you would just believe what they said. Mad- When you are mad you just HAVE to be right that you have gone crazy about whatever you are trying to prove. Then people don't wnat to believe you because you are so crazy. A quote for being crazy/mad: "God alone could answer you. For heaven's sake, get up... He hah no idea what I was talking about. He probably thought I had lost my mind." Elie was screaming about how they were all going to get expelled and even though he was right, the people couldn't believe him because the way he was screaming and talking made him sound so crazy. In real life being mad would be if you thought you saw a person in your closet. And you kept screaming to your parents that there was someone there but they couldn't see anyone. You would be considered mad because you were crazy about something that you thought was true. I agree with what ansley said because believing something isn't the same as having evidence, once you have evidence you don't have too believe any more because you know.

. To know means to have understanding of things or events that happened. To be fully knowledgeable you must know the facts and form your own opinions this is very valuable when you have a primary sources to back up what you believe and if you were there that especially helps because you were there to experience the event or thing. pg 28. "We stared at the flames in the darkness. A wrenched stench floated in the air." this he experienced he realized and knew that Mrs. Schachter's was right about the fire and screaming it was real and right in front of him. A real life example is knowing what happened in the concentration camps by having people that survived to tell the tale, documentation, and me have some of the buildings left.
. To believe is to have confidence in the truth of your knowledge of something. An example is believing that Elie Weisel was actually in the concentration camps because he used descriptive detail and the facts match up to the time period. pg. 46 "On the way we saw some young German girls. The guards began to tease them. The girls giggled... They went on joking." I think maybe they didn't believe that the guards were doing anything wrong because they didn't show any negativity towards what the guard were doing. . To be crazy is to believe in something when all things point to not being possible. An example is to think that people would kill the Jews because of there religion because this was unheard of in the 20th century. Another example is to see dead people because they are dead so it doesn't really make sense to see them alive. "But people not only refused to believe his tales, they refused to listen. Some even insinuated that he only wanted their pity, that he was imagining things. Others flatly said that he had gone mad." this is because what Moishe was telling was unheard of. pg.7

To know means that you understand teh facts of the situtation, but you may not acknowledge or have faith in these facts/knowledge. This is when someone is in denial; they understand the situation, but can't accept the reality for what it is. Quote: "So many events had taken place in just a few hours that I had completeley lost all track of time...Surley it was a dream." Here, Elie knows that the time since leaving the ghetto and arriving at the concentration camp has been incredibly short, but he can't even believe that he is in the concentration camp, even though that is the reality around him. Real World Example: In the Real World, an example of this denial is in the 5-Stages of Grief, which ususally applies to death. During the 5-stages of Grief, people go through stages such as anger, bargaining, denial, depression, and eventually acceptance. During the stages before acceptance, the person going through the grief is essentially in denial about the thing they are grieving for. To believe something is to completley accept or understand it, even if there is no factual proof that it exsists. This can go hand in hand with knowing, as you may *know* that one thing does not exsist, but you still *believe* that it does. Quote: "Freed from the barbers' clutches, we began to wander about the crowd, finding friends, acquaintences. Every encounter filled us with joy-yes, joy: Thank God! You are still alive!" Here we can see that Elie and the people around him still have hope; they still believe that in the end thing will be ok, or that there is still hope, when by many definitions there is none. Around them, the reality tells them there is no hope, and yet they still believe that there is. Real World Example: In the real world, the best example of this is religion. In religion, one will believe that something is true; whether it be a God or Gods, a single belief or rule, and even though there may not be any factual evidence to support these beliefs or to disporve them, the followers of these beliefs still hold them to be true. In essence, they believe regardless of what the reality may or may not be, and make their To be mad or crazy can be thought of in two ways: either a form of belief beyond just believing, or simply a mental illness. In terms of belief beyond belief, this is because someone who is crazy can take what the belief, while totally disregarding reality, and transforming what they percieve in reality into what they belive. In terms of a mental illness, this takes the form of an illness such as Schizophrenia, in which reality becomes distorted for someone with it. Quote: "'Fire! I see a fire!'...'It;s nothing, Mother! There's nothing there...'" Here, we see that the Madame truly and firmly believes, and probably percieves, that there is a fire of some sort, regardless of what reality or anyone else says. Real World Example: Schizophrenia. Schizophrenia is a mental disorder in which it is hard or impossible at times to tell between what is real and not real; this is due to very powerful hallucinations. This is a good example of what being "Crazy" or "Mad" can be; even if the person is a genius, if they have a mental disorder such as this, they can't even tell what the actual facts are, and so their "world" is shaped by their hallucinations *and* reality at once. I agree with what noah is saying when he says its a term beyond belief because he is explaining how going mad connects with believing.
